  3. RICHMOND, Va. -- Threats of violence, including claims of a militia storming Virginia's Capitol and protesters weaponizing drones, have put federal and state authorities on high alert ahead of Monday's gun-rights rally. Thousands of people across the country are expected to show up as part of a demonstration demanding state Democrats drop a push for comprehensive gun control in the commonwealth. The fear of violence has spread quickly and has led to heightened security, road closures and a ban on firearms in the Capitol and on its grounds. An event memorializing victims of gun violence, including one honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., was canceled due to safety concerns. The Federal Aviation Administration has banned drones within a 2-mile radius of the Capitol and nearby students at VCU and the Medical College of Virginia have been encouraged to stay indoors. Virginia Citizens Defense League President Philip Van Cleave told Fox News it's not the pro-gun groups that are stoking fear. "It's the Democrats," he said. "It's almost like they want something to happen. It sounds crazy, but they keep doing it and you have to start wondering if that's intentional." Cleave said membership in his organization has tripled in the past six weeks and that 10,000 people have signed up for free email alerts. He attributes the spike in popularity to Gov. Ralph Northam and Democrats in the state legislature. Van Cleave believes they have "declared war on gun owners" and is counting on gun-rights advocates to show up Monday to have their collective voices heard. "It's woken up gun owners across the state," he said. Jaylynne Sensy, a mother of three from Chesterfield County, told Fox News she's planning on coming to the rally and bringing her three children with her. "They're trying to take our guns and that's not going to happen," she said. "We won't stand for it. This wouldn't happen if Republicans were still running things." In November, Democrats flipped the state Senate and the House of Delegates, giving them control of both the governor's office and the legislature for the first time in a generation. Following his reelection, Northam vowed to push through new gun-control measures, saying it was a top priority for Virginia Democrats. In doing so, he angered gun-rights advocates who believe he is trying to take away their rights. That suspicion was fueled further on Friday when President Trump warned in a tweet that Virginia Democrats were threatening Americans' right to bear arms. "Your 2nd Amendment is under very serious attack in the Great Commonwealth of Virginia. That's what happens when you vote for Democrats, they will take your guns away. Republicans will win Virginia in 2020. Thank you Dems!" he tweeted. 80.2K people are talking about this Last week, four gun-control bills advanced in the General Assembly, setting the stage for a contentious showdown between gun-rights advocates and the Democratic lawmakers who campaigned on bringing changes to the state following last year's mass shooting at a Virginia Beach municipal complex. The bills that sailed through the Senate Judiciary Committee would require background checks on all firearms purchases, allow law enforcement to temporarily remove guns from people deemed to be a risk to themselves or others, limit handgun purchases to one a month and let localities decide on whether to ban weapons from certain events. To become law, the bills would have to pass the full Senate and the House of Delegates before going to the governor for his signature. In a symbolic sign of defiance, more than 100 municipalities in Virginia have designated themselves as a safe haven or sanctuary for the Second Amendment. Lawmakers and authorities in those areas have said they will refuse to enforce new gun control laws the Virginia Legislature passes. Monday's rally comes about 2 1/2 years after a deadly incident in Charlottesville, Va. In that case, hundreds of white nationalists and their supporters gathered in Charlottesville -- about 70 miles from Richmond -- to demonstrate over plans to remove a Confederate statute. They were met by counter-protesters and violence quickly erupted. At one point, a vehicle drove into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing one and injuring more than a dozen others. Fearing a similar scenario, Northam declared a state of emergency ahead of Richmond's rally. He also banned firearms and other weapons on the Capitol grounds. "We have received credible intelligence from our enforcement agencies that there are groups with malicious plans for the rally that is planned for Monday," Northam said during a press conference on Wednesday. House Republican Leader Todd Gilbert called the upcoming rally "a time for people to peacefully assemble and petition their government." "It is not a place for hate or violence," he said in a statement. "Any group that comes to Richmond to spread white supremacist garbage, or any other form of hate, violence or civil unrest isn't welcome here." On Thursday, authorities announced the arrest of three men linked to the Base, a white extremist, anti-government group that has been tracked by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The men, who obtained weapons and discussed going to the Richmond rally, were charged with a number of federal crimes in Maryland. A day later, law enforcement announced the arrest of at least four other men tied to the group. Northam later said the majority of those planning to attend Monday's rally had no interest in fanning the flames of hate but acknowledged there were still a few hellbent on it.

  12. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, this is “a big old fish.” In late December, a fisherman caught a massive Warsaw-grouper near southwest Florida. Now, biologists from Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute have determined that this is one truly impressive catch. The research institute posted about the fish to their Facebook page, where they revealed that this particular fish is the oldest specimen of its kind that they’ve studied. According to the post, samples obtained from catches this old and large are considered rare. The caption for the photo, which shows the massive fish looming over the man who caught it, starts off with a somewhat obvious statement: “A big old fish!” The post continues, “This 350-lb Warsaw grouper was caught by hook-and-line on December 29th 2019, off Southwest Florida in ~600 ft of water. Biologists from FWRI’s Age & Growth Lab estimated the age of this fish at 50 years old, making this the oldest sample collected for our aging program. Acquiring the otolith from this fish was extremely valuable as samples from larger and older fish are rare.” According to the FWC’s website, otoliths are hard structures located behind the brain of bony fished and can be used in the detection of sound and gravitational forces. They’re also referred to as earstones. “Warsaw are characterized by an elongated second dorsal spine,” the post continues. “They’re the only grouper with 10 dorsal spines; all others have 11. Although adults usually occur in depths of 180-1700 ft, juveniles are occasionally seen around jetties and shallow-water reefs in the northern Gulf.” While the FWC appears to be excited about this particular catch, they don’t promote fishermen targeting these fish. According to them, the “status of the population in the Gulf is unknown.”
  13. Kentucky police have accused a woman of killing a man with an aggressive pit bull, according to reports. Authorities said Donald Abner, 55, died after being mauled by the dog at his home on Pug Lane in Conway overnight Friday, local media reported. Melissa Wolke, 38, was accused of siccing the dog on Abner and refusing to command it to retreat, according to reports. She was charged with murder. “The way I look at it she used her animal, a pit bull, as a weapon to help her in this altercation,” Kentucky State Police trooper Scottie Pennington said, according to WKYT-TV. Mugshot for Mellisa Wolke, 38. (Rockcastle County Sheriff's Office ) He called the crime a first in his 24 years as a trooper. “There’s something new every day that happens,” he said. Wolke and Abner were friends, he said. It’s unclear what the altercation was about. Wolke was also charged with resisting arrest, menacing and public intoxication, online records show. Fox 56 Lexington quoted the local coroner as saying Abner died as a result of the dog attack. The pit bull was taken away in a body bag after troopers were forced to kill it with gunshots, according to the station.
  14. Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa's search for a girlfriend to join him on a voyage around the moon will be the subject of a new documentary program, in the latest attention-grabbing stunt by the entrepreneur. 44-year-old Maezawa, who sold his online fashion retailer Zozo Inc to SoftBank Group Corp, is seeking single females aged over 20 for the show, which will be shown on streaming service AbemaTV. "As feelings of loneliness and emptiness slowly begin to surge upon me, there's one thing that I think about: continuing to love one woman,'' wrote Maezawa on a website for applicants. "I want to find a 'life partner'. With that future partner of mine, I want to shout our love and world peace from outer space,'' continued Maezawa, who is due to fly around the moon in 2023 as the first private passenger with Elon Musk's SpaceX. Yusaku Maezawa, the chief executive of Zozo. REUTERS/Kim Kyung-Hoon Maezawa, who recently split up from actress girlfriend Ayame Goriki, 27, has said he plans to take artists on the flight to inspire works based on the experience, in a project he dubbed Dear Moon. The documentary, titled "Full Moon Lovers,'' will stream on AbemaTV, which is backed by online ad agency CyberAgent and broadcaster TV Asahi and targets a younger audience that is turning away from traditional TV. Applicants must "be interested in going into space and able to participate in the preparation for it'' and "be someone who wishes for world peace,'' the website states. Applications close on Jan. 17 and Maezawa will select his partner by the end of March. The documentary is the latest high-profile move by the billionaire, who is also giving away $9 million to his Twitter followers to try and spark debate in Japan about the merits of the idea of basic income.
  15. While the playoffs can add a bit of padding to National Football League players’ bank accounts at the end of the season, most players are paid far less during the highly watched games than they are during their regular season schedule. Players on teams that qualified for the Wild Card round – which was played last weekend – earned either $28,000 or $31,000 this year, depending on whether their team was the division winner. Players on teams that qualify for the division playoffs, which begin Saturday, will receive $31,000, while those on teams that qualify for the conference championship will earn $56,000. A player on a team that wins the Super Bowl this year will earn $124,000, while a player on the losing team will earn $62,000. Interestingly, teams that did not play in the Wild Card games – or those who clinched the top spots in their divisions – did not get paid last week, Robert Raiola, director of the Sports and Entertainment Group at PKF O’Connor Davies, told FOX Business. Those teams included the San Francisco 49ers, the Baltimore Ravens, the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs. Raiola noted that playoff pay, overall, is low compared to what players earn during the regular season. Many players receive only playoff pay – as determined by the league’s collective bargaining agreement – once their team makes it to the postseason. And, of course, players will not get to keep the full amount they earn because they will owe taxes. Regular season and postseason earnings are both taxed as ordinary income. U.S.-based players pay federal taxes – where the top rate is 37 percent – in addition to state and local taxes, which are much higher for some players than others. A handful of teams are located in states like Florida, Texas and Washington, which don't charge income tax. Even athletes who live in states without income taxes are subject to taxes in other states where they play and earn income. Those "jock taxes" are usually calculated by dividing the number of workdays spent (practices and games) in the city by the total number of workdays, but some states just use games played. It's not a double tax, however. Players pay taxes equal to the highest rate in either their resident or non-resident state. They get credit for the taxes in the lower-tax state. The Super Bowl will be played in Atlanta, Georgia, this February, meaning winning and losing players will owe taxes to the state and city. Next year’s game will be played in Florida, where there is no state income tax. The teams set to square off this weekend in the division playoffs include the Minnesota Vikings and the San Francisco 49ers; the Tennessee Titans and the Baltimore Ravens; the Houston Texans and the Kansas City Chiefs; and the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers. The four winning teams from those games will advance to the conference championships next week.
  16. The conservative group One Million Moms is accusing Burger King of “crossing the line” over an Impossible Whopper commercial that uses the “D-word.” “Burger King is airing a commercial that uses profanity to advertise its Impossible Whopper -- a burger made from plants instead of beef,” the group’s website reads. “The language in the commercial is offensive, and it’s sad that this once family restaurant has made yet another deliberate decision to produce a controversial advertisement instead of a wholesome one.” The group, which is a division of the American Family Association, called out a commercial that documents the reactions of taste tests of the now-popular meatless burger. One man, completely stunned by the Impossible Whopper’s tastiness says: “Damn, that’s good.” 737 people are talking about this Apparently the use of the "D-word" went too far for One Million Moms. “One Million Moms finds this highly inappropriate. When responding to the taste test, he didn’t have to curse,” the group said. “Or if, in fact, it was a real and unscripted interview in which the man was not an actor, then Burger King could have simply chosen to edit the profanity out of the commercial.” Conservative group "One Million Moms" called the Burger King ad “irresponsible and tasteless.” (Photo: Burger King) The group called the ad “irresponsible and tasteless.” “It is extremely destructive and damaging to impressionable children viewing the commercial. We all know children repeat what they hear,” they continued. One Million Moms called for the public to sign a petition urging Burger King to cancel the commercial, “or at the very least, edit out the cuss word immediately.” This isn’t the first time the group, which claims its mission is to “stop the exploitation of our children,” has used its platform to call out a commercial it does not agree with. Last month, the group caused the Hallmark Channel to initially pull a Zola commercial featuring two brides kissing during a same-sex wedding ceremony. “Now, parents can no longer trust Hallmark because Hallmark is no longer allowing parents to be the primary educators when it comes to sex and sexual morality,” One Million Moms said at the time. Hallmark later announced that it decided to pull the commercial just days after the petition was launched. After public backlash, however, the network reversed its decision and reinstated the same-sex marriage commercials.
  17. Gwyneth Paltrow has done it again, folks. The 47-year-old actress and serial lifestyle entrepreneur found another way to shock the world with the sale of a vagina-scented candle in her online Goop store. The candle, provocatively named “This Smells Like My Vagina,” will run customers a cool $75 and boasts a fragrance packed with geranium, citrusy bergamot and cedar, according to the Daily Mail. Apparently the idea for the candle, made by Heretic, originally started out as a joke. As the product description reads: “This candle started as a joke between perfumer Douglas Little and GP -- the two were working on a fragrance, and she blurted out, ‘Uhhh ... this smells like a vagina’ -- but evolved into a funny, gorgeous, sexy, and beautifully unexpected scent.” Goop describes the candle as “a funny, gorgeous, sexy, and beautifully unexpected scent.” (Photo: Getty Images/Goop) Apparently, Paltrow’s lifestyle company is onto something. The candle is currently sold out on both Goop’s and Heretic’s websites. Paltrow, of course, is no stranger to controversy when it comes to selling eyebrow-raising products. Last year during the holiday season, Goop made headlines over a holiday gift guide that included $43,000 earrings and a BDSM kit. The list was so outrageous, Goop itself dubbed it the “ridiculous but awesome gift guide.” Other items included a handmade, animal cruelty-free moisture bar shaped like an egg for $65. The BDSM kit, however, was probably the most outrageous of the bunch. “Think of this kit as a beginner’s guide to BDSM,” said Goop’s website. “It’s even equipped with DIY restraining straps, to help you, him, or her assume the position (wink, wink).”
  18. Meghan Markle is wasting no time embarking on her and Prince Harry's independent career path amid their exit as senior members of the royal family. The Duchess of Sussex already inked a deal with Disney before she and Prince Harry shocked the world with their "Megxit" announcement this week, according to a new report. Meghan Markle inked a new deal with Disney ahead of her and Prince Harry's monumental "Megxit" announcement, a new report claims. (Getty) U.K.'s The Times claims the duchess recorded a voiceover for a Disney project before she and Prince Harry left for a six-week-long sabbatical ahead of the Christmas holiday. The outlet claims Markle did the voiceover in return for a donation to Elephants Without Borders, a non-profit organization in Botswana that aims to protect the species from poaching. Meghan Markle reportedly recorded a voiceover with Disney, and in turn, the money earned will be donated to a charity helping to save elephants, according to the report. (AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth) News of the deal comes months after Markle attended the U.K. premiere of "The Lion King" in London. The Duchess' attendance at the red carpet event made headlines after she was spotted speaking to Pharrell about the lack of privacy that comes along with being a royal. As Pharrell complimented Meghan and Harry's marriage, the Duchess of Sussex responded, "Oh, thank you. They don't make it easy." As a part of their big announcement on Wednesday, Prince Harry and Meghan updated their official Sussexroyal.com website with answers to burning questions about how the couple's finances would be impacted by reduced royal roles. The couple explained that in the current structure, they do not earn "any income in any form," but value the "ability to earn a professional income." A rep for Elephants Without Borders did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment.
  19. President Trump on Saturday described Democrats as being “unhinged” and accused them of "defending the life" of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani -- who was taken out by a U.S. strike last week in what the Trump administration has described as an act of self-defense against an “imminent” attack. “Where have the Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats gone when they have spent the last 3 days defending the life of Qassem Soleimani, one of the worst terrorists in history and the father of the roadside bomb? He was also looking to do big future damage! Dems are ‘unhinged,'" he tweeted. He did not give any examples of Democrats defending the military leader. 35.8K people are talking about this Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Forces, was killed last week in Baghdad, days after Iranian-backed militia supporters stormed the U.S. embassy. Administration officials have said that the strike was conducted to deter imminent attacks on U.S. interests. Democrats in Congress – and those seeking their party’s nomination for president -- have described the killing as a dangerous escalation and accused Trump of making the region less safe. “Donald Trump may have been an arsonist that lit a fuse that plunges the Middle East into a catastrophic war, though he's trying to pretend as if he's a firefighter,” said Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., this week “That's a problem.” However, while many have opposed the strike, no Democrats have defended Soleimani or his actions as head of the Quds -- with many saying in statements that he will not be missed. “No American will mourn Qassem Soleimani’s passing,” former Vice President Joe Biden said in a statement hours after Soleimani was taken out. “He deserved to be brought to justice for his crimes against American troops and thousands of innocents throughout the region. He supported terror and sowed chaos.” But Trump has attacked Democrats for their response, telling a crowd in Toledo, Ohio that Democrats are outraged over his death. "The radical left Democrats have expressed outrage over the termination of this horrible terrorist," Trump said. "Instead, they should be outraged by Soleimani's savage crimes and the fact that his countless victims were denied justice for so long." The narrative that Democrats have in some way sided with Iran was given some fuel when a number of Democrats appeared to implicate Trump for the death of 176 civilians killed when an Iranian missile brought down a passenger jet. “If what is being projected is true, this is yet another example of collateral damage from the actions that have been taken in a provocative way by the president of the United States,” Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., said Thursday.

  21. Let's add this to the list of things we shouldn't have needed to tell you . . . but it's a bad idea to slather TOOTHPASTE all over your genitals. Apparently some people have been using toothpaste as LUBE and posting about their traumatic experiences online . . . including things like rashes, irritation, and even burns on their junk. So now doctors are warning people NOT to put toothpaste down there. Quote, "It will, in all probability, cause chemical burns and the stinging pain can last for several days."
