The Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris Fire

Recommended Posts

In case you missed this, one of the most famous architectural masterpieces and significant churches in the WORLD caught on fire yesterday.

The 850-year-old Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris caught on fire around 7:00 P.M. Paris time last night, and it took 400 firefighters hours to get it under control.

Sadly, its famous spire collapsed and its roof was totally burned.  Much of the church was made of wood, dating back to the 1100s and 1200s, and a lot of that wood was lost in the fire as well.

Both of the church's famous towers appear to be safe, and so is the main structure.  The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, said the, quote, "worst has been avoided" and pledged to rebuild the cathedral.

Emergency crews were apparently able to save quite a few of the priceless antiques in the church, including the crown of thorns Jesus wore before the crucifixion and the tunic of St. Louis.

There were no deaths in the fire, and French officials are launching an investigation to figure out how it started.  As of now, there's no sign of arson or terrorism involved . . . it's believed to be an accident.
