Kramer
Law enforcement is cracking down on unlicensed contractors. Since the hurricane, they've made 52 arrests and have dozens of pending cases. The task force created for the operation is called Citizens United Fighting Fraud, or CUFF. Law enforcement uses a variety of tactics to catch unlicensed contractors in the act, including a sting on Tuesday. "Basically we are calling contractors we've already vetted and determined don't have a license and asking them to meet us at the house to give us an estimate on the roof," said Cpl. Dennis Rozier, head of the criminal investigations division financial crime unit. The contractors think they're meeting with a homeowner to give a roof estimate, but the homeowner is actually an agent, and the house is used by law enforcement after getting permission from the homeowner. "Once they provide an estimate they are guilty of contracting without a license," said Cpl. Rozier. After the contractor has made an estimate, law enforcement will approach the suspect to make sure they are licensed. If not, they could be arrested or taken into custody for questioning depending on the circumstance. Cpl. Rozier said a lot of out of state workers aren't aware of the license requirements. Under a state of emergency, it's a third-degree felony. To check if a company is licensed or not, click here.
