Rutherford High bathroom Fire

Students at a local high school are safe after one student started a fire in a school bathroom Monday morning, but the incident revealed a glitch in the school district's alert system.

Bay District Schools officials said in a statement:

"Yesterday, mid-morning, someone set a small fire in the bathroom of Building Four at Rutherford High School. The fire was quickly extinguished by a teacher but that process caused smoke which set off alarms and prompted evacuation of the entire campus. The Fire Department responded promptly, addressed the situation and students were quickly returned to class with Building Four students and faculty being redirected to other available locations. Parents were notified via social media after attempts to utilize IRIS were made. Unfortunately, IRIS was inaccessible for a couple of hours during the middle of the day but the alert eventually went out in the early afternoon. The district and IRIS are working together to resolve the issue and administrators are continuing to investigate the source of the fire."
