The Saddest #1 Songs of All Time

 

HIGHLIGHTS:  Someone used a Spotify algorithm to determine the saddest #1 songs in history.  But it determined that the saddest song of them all was "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" . . . which is actually a love ballad.

 

 

FULL STORY:  Spotify has an algorithm that supposedly quantifies the amount of sadness in a song.  And a "data journalist" for the BBC decided to use it to find the saddest songs to hit #1 in the history of the Billboard charts.

 

 

That's 60 years of music.  The Hot 100 started in July of 1958.  Here are the five "saddest" #1 songs . . .

 

 

1.  "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", Roberta Flack  (1972)

 

 

 

2.  "Three Times a Lady", The Commodores  (1978)

 

 

 

3.  "Are You Lonesome Tonight?", Elvis Presley  (1960)

 

 

 

4.  "Mr. Custer", Larry Verne  (1960)

 

 

 

5.  "Still", The Commodores  (1979)

 

 

 

Unfortunately, Spotify's algorithm isn't perfect.  Only two of these songs are actually sad . . . lyrically speaking, anyway:  "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" and "Still".
