District 5 School Board Member, Steve Moss said "The perspective that these students have is very unique in regards to what happened there at their campus. So we as a school board, our main job today was to listen." They are a part of the March For Our Lives,On The Road To Change Movement. Which is touring the country to speak about gun violence. With recent legislation allowing teachers to be armed in Florida schools-- guns in schools was a hot topic of conversation. One student spoke out during the meeting and said, "We want to prevent someone from going to the school with the gun in the first place. Not start a shoot out." Not all community members present saw things the same way. Josh Larck said, "If we remove the gun-free zones and you allow people to protect themselves- then maybe they can protect themselves. Just makes sense to me." Moss took time to explain the recent Florida law under the Guardian Program. "The average teacher is not eligible to carry. So that limits it to folks not in the classroom, like coaches, administrators, custodians- those type folks. So a lot of folks have the misperception that it is the second grade teacher- and according to the way the law is written, full-time teachers are not eligible." The March For Our Lives group's goals include: Universal, comprehensive background checks Bringing the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives) into the 21st century with a digitized, searchable database Funds for the CDC (Center for Disease Control) to research the gun violence epidemic in America High-capacity magazine ban A ban on semi-automatic assault rifles The students ended their evening in PCB by participating in the voter registration event in Pier park.
